R Remplacer les éléments manquants dans un textConnection avec NA

Si je

a = read.table(textConnection('a b c d 
1 2 3 4

1 2 3 4','r'),header=T) 

Je reçois une erreur

Error in scan(file, what, nmax, sep, dec, quote, skip, nlines, na.strings, : 
    line 3 did not have 4 elements 

Comment puis-je obtenir R pour remplacer les éléments manquants avec NA plutôt que de ne pas avec un Erreur?

1 2 3 4','r'),header=T, fill=TRUE) 

a
